Regular tyre maintenance – checking tread patterns, depths and air pressures – can greatly enhance tyre longevity. Alongside wheel balancing and alignment (tracking), you can expect your tyre rubber to last a long time.
However, things inevitably sometimes go wrong. Sharp objects like glass or a nail left in the road might lead to a puncture or tear. Hitting a pothole or kerb at the wrong angle could damage the interior or put the tracking out. A tyre might even reach the end of its safe, useful life. In all these cases, it’s time to take your VW, Audi, Skoda, or Seat — or at least the affected tyre — to a trusted tyre centre.
The technician’s suggestions will depend on your specific case. For example:
- If your tread is 3mm or less deep, it’s recommended that you get new tyres. Tyres with tread less than 1.6mm deep are illegal.
- A puncture through the middle of the tread can usually be fixed with a plug.
- If the valve’s leaking, a new valve might solve the problem.
- Punctures within an inch or so of the sidewall can’t be patched. Unfortunately, they’ll need to be switched for a new tyre.
- Likewise, sidewall damage can’t be repaired. Issues here mean you’ll need a new tyre.
- Significant uneven wear likely means tracking adjustments or wheel balancing alongside a new tyre.
- It’s usually best to change at least two tyres at the same time (the opposite two across an axle).

Frequently Asked Questions
You could get your tyres balanced as part of every service. However, it usually isn’t part of the service schedule. Most people only request balancing when they notice vibrations through the steering wheel, worsening with higher speeds.
Tyre rotation isn’t a legal necessity and usually isn’t noted on a service schedule. It’s something we used to do in this country and still happens elsewhere worldwide. If you do prefer to rotate tyres, consider adding this to your regular service.
The recommended tyre pressure for your car will be in your owner’s manual or on a sticker on the driver’s doorframe.
Theoretically, if you replace all four tyres at once and stick to a rigid tyre rotation schedule, you won’t need to change any tyres for some time. When that time does come around, you can replace all four. In reality, you’ll encounter irreparable punctures and other damage. It’s okay to replace one tyre, but replacing the other across the axle might be best if its tread is too low.
Replace your tyres when the tread depth is less than 3mm or if you notice any cracks, bulges or other signs of damage.
If your tyre is flat, replace it with your spare and head to our VW tyre centre or call a roadside assistance service.
Tyres typically last between 25,000 and 50,000 miles, depending on driving conditions, maintenance and other factors.
You should not drive with a punctured tyre, as it can cause further damage and potentially a blowout. These are hazardous and sometimes lead to fatal incidents.
An alignment adjusts the angles of your tyres to ensure they are correctly ‘aligned’ with each other and your vehicle. Request alignment once per year or whenever you notice uneven tread wear or the car pulling left or right.
A technician can usually repair a puncture within the tread area if it isn’t too large. However, if the puncture is on the sidewall or the tyre is damaged beyond repair, they’ll have to replace it.
