Life gets busy. Money gets tight. Your car seems fine. We get it. It can be tempting to delay your VW service and think, ‘I’ll sort it later. There’s no rush.’
At Sunset VW, we’ll always be honest with you. Skipping one service doesn’t automatically mean your car will suddenly refuse to start the next day. But it does increase the risk of bigger problems later.
We always recommend sticking to VW’s regular service schedule. When you see a service light or the ‘Service Now’ message pops up on your screen, take your car to a trusted local technician. Regular servicing keeps your VW safe, efficient, responsive and reliable, and gives experts a chance to spot small issues before they become expensive repairs.
Is it bad to skip one VW service?
It’s not ideal to skip a service, even if your car feels normal.
VW designs its service schedules for a reason. At certain intervals, the mechanical components of your car have seen a certain amount of wear. They need to be checked or replaced.
For example, after an oil change, your engine oil starts off clean and fresh. Over time, and with regular, normal use, it gets dirty. In turn, the filters clog up. The oil pump may have to work harder, lubrication becomes less efficient, and so on.
These problems build up over time, and it’s the same for almost every component in your car. You might not notice them during everyday driving, but they are there. Regular servicing helps you stay on top of these issues.
Skipping one service might not cause an immediate fault. But it removes an important chance to check the car properly.
Can skipping a VW service affect my warranty?
It can. But not in the same doom-and-gloom way that many on the internet claim.
For warranty reasons (among others), it’s important to stay up to date with your service schedule. If you miss services, certain warranty claims can become more difficult, especially if the problem is linked to poor maintenance.
Crucially, this doesn’t always mean that missing a service will cause a warranty problem. However, let’s take an example. Say at your next service, your VW was due for a replacement timing belt. If you skipped that service, and 5,000 miles later the timing belt snapped, your warranty may not cover the damage.
On the other hand, if you skip the timing belt service and an electrical issue with the windscreen wipers developed, for instance, your warranty is less likely to be affected.
Can skipping a service affect my VW’s resale value?
Skipping a service might not raise too many red flags, but if you’ve had your car for five years and only have evidence of two or three services, potential buyers will worry.
When someone buys a used VW, they often want to see a full service history (which you’ll often read in listings as ‘FSH’). It gives them confidence that the car has been cared for.
If services are missing, who knows what else may have been missed? And what condition is the car really in underneath the surface? That makes the car harder to sell, or it may reduce the price someone is willing to pay.
Is a VW service the same as an MOT?
A service and an MOT aren’t the same thing.
An MOT checks whether your car meets the legal safety and environmental standards on the day of the test.
A service is about looking after the car. It checks wear, maintenance items, fluids, filters and other parts that help keep your VW running well.
Your car can pass its MOT and still need a service. Anyone can check your car’s MOT history online (including you). Even if it’s positive, this history isn’t evidence that you have maintained your car properly, and that’s what a future buyer, insurer or warranty provider will want to see.
What if I can’t afford a full service right now?
If you can’t afford a full service right now, don’t completely ignore your VW. Here’s what we suggest.
Speak to your local service centre and explain your situation. They may be able to advise the most important checks first, such as oil, brakes, tyres, fluids and safety-related items. A smaller service or basic check is much better than doing nothing at all.
Avoid putting off anything that significantly affects safety. If you notice warning lights, strange noises, poor braking, shaking, leaks, burning smells or a change in how the car drives, get it checked as soon as possible.
It’s always better to know what you’re dealing with. Even if you can’t do every repair at once, a trustworthy technician can help you understand what’s urgent and what can be scheduled for later.
What should I do if I have already missed a service?
If you’ve already missed a VW service, the best thing to do is to book one as soon as you can.
VW’s service schedule may automatically recommend a certain type of service. If not, a trusted technician can check your service history, look at your mileage and tell you what you need.
Even if you’ve missed a service, a technician may be able to carry out the checks and replacements needed to get you back up to date. They can also explain what this means for your warranty.
You should also book sooner if:
- Your dashboard shows a warning light
- Your brakes feel different
- Your car makes unusual noises
- Your tyres are wearing unevenly
- Your fuel economy has dropped
- Your car feels rough, slow, or less smooth than usual
