Ever driven down the A52 and spotted that red brake warning light flickering on your VW, Audi, SEAT or Skoda dashboard and wondered what’s really happening? You’re not the only one. That light has more than one meaning. Sometimes it’s a quick fix, other times it points to a bigger issue. Either way, you need to know what it’s telling you.

What the brake warning light actually means
The brake warning light usually shows as a red circle with an exclamation mark inside, often bracketed. Some models also display the word ‘BRAKE’. Its purpose is simple. It alerts you to something affecting the braking system.
On most VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda models, the same light doubles up for the handbrake. If the handbrake is applied, the light glows steadily. When it’s released, the light should go out.
The ABS light is different. That one is amber, marked ‘ABS’, and only relates to the anti-lock braking system. ABS supports braking stability in slippery conditions, but your main brakes still function if it fails. If both lights appear together, though, the problem is more serious and may involve fluid pressure or both braking and stability systems.
Now, here’s a really important distinction. The brake light can be triggered in two different ways. Sometimes it’s a momentary switch activation, such as when a handbrake switch or fluid sensor briefly makes contact. This is when flickering tends to happen. If the switch connects and then disconnects quickly, it might show up as a ‘flickering’ on the dashboard.
On the other hand, sometimes the ECU logs a fault code. When that happens, the light usually comes on solid and stays on until the fault is cleared. Flickering in those situations is much less common, unless there’s a problem with the dashboard itself.
So if your brake warning light is flickering rather than staying lit, it’s far more likely to be related to a switch or fluid level than to a logged ECU fault.
Why the brake warning light comes on and flickers
The most common cause is low brake fluid. The reservoir under the bonnet holds fluid for the braking system. A float sensor measures the level, and when it dips below the minimum mark, the warning light activates. If the level is right on the limit, the fluid can slosh when you corner or brake, briefly dropping below the sensor and making the light flicker.
On most VW Group models, the reservoir is located at the rear of the engine bay, near the windscreen, typically on the driver’s side. It’s a translucent container with a black or dark screw cap, often marked with a yellow brake symbol. The fluid should always sit between the ‘MIN’ and ‘MAX’ lines. Most modern Volkswagen Group vehicles in the UK use DOT 4 brake fluid, although older models may specify DOT 3. High-performance versions might require DOT 4 LV or DOT 5.1. Always check the handbook before topping up.
You can top up your brake fluid yourself, but it’s very important to use the right kind. (The reason for filling to the max line is that it gives you a reference point. If you come back in a week and find that the level is lower, you’ll know there’s a leak. This is a very serious situation, and you should top the brake fluid back up and go straight to a trusted VW mechanic in the Derby area.)
A second likely cause is the handbrake not being fully released. With manual levers in particular, it’s possible to drive off with the handbrake only partway down. That can trigger the warning light, sometimes solid, sometimes flickering as the lever vibrates. Pushing it firmly down into place usually clears the issue.
You might need a replacement part or a brake service. Either way, if you can’t get the light to turn off, it’s best to head straight to your local VW garage for some help.
Flickering can also happen with a faulty sensor connection. The wiring for the brake fluid reservoir or the handbrake switch may corrode or work loose. Vibration then makes and breaks the circuit, which you see as an intermittent light. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so give your VW technician a quick ring and book in a service appointment to get it checked out.
Another possibility is worn brake pads or discs. On some Volkswagen Group cars, pads contain wear sensors. As the material wears thin, the sensor starts to activate. At first, this may be intermittent, depending on pressure or flex. Eventually, it becomes constant. Squealing noises or vibration under braking are further signs that the pads or discs are ready for replacement.
Sometimes, it’s possible to see how thick your brake pads are without removing the wheels. However, if you’re at all unsure, take your car to your local VW garage and ask them to check and repair the brakes for you.
Finally, there’s the electronic rabbit hole to dive down. A faulty circuit, ECU or ABS/stability module can send the wrong signals to the dashboard. In those cases, the light often stays on solid because the ECU has logged a fault code, but odd flickering is possible if the fault is intermittent or there’s a particularly strange bug in the system.
In these cases, you need a specialist automotive electrician to perform diagnostics and delve into the vehicle’s code. Unfortunately, this can be quite expensive, but it’s really important to get it fixed as soon as possible, to prevent the issue from getting any worse, or more dangerous.
Could the dashboard itself be causing the flicker?
Here’s one last rare but technically possible cause. Sometimes, the brake warning light may flicker even when the brakes and sensors are all functioning properly and in good condition. Dashboards are electronic. They use small lights and a circuit board to show warnings, and these systems talk to the car’s computers.
A flicker can happen if there’s a loose connector behind the dash, a tiny power glitch or a problem with the circuit that controls the lights. Even temperature changes or vibration can make a solder joint or connection break for a moment before reconnecting, causing the light to blink.
If the dashboard is at fault, a VW specialist can test it, check the connectors and fix or replace the instrument panel if needed. This certainly isn’t a common VW problem, and would be vanishingly rare in newer instrument clusters, but it’s worth exploring if you drive an older VW and you’ve hit a dead end.
Why it’s important to fix a flickering VW brake warning light
Although some of the problems listed on this page aren’t immediately hazardous, they could quickly turn into something dangerous. The warning lights on your VW’s dashboard are all valid, and even though the problem can quite often be the sensors themselves, it’s much better to be safe than sorry.
Plus, warning lights on the dashboard mean your car might not pass its MOT. This certainly applies if the brake warning light or the ABS light comes on and stays on constantly. If they flicker, it might be more of a grey area. Your MOT tester might want to do some further checks to make sure it’s nothing serious. Flickering lights might not cause an automatic fail, but testers may flag them if a safety issue is suspected.
What you should do next
If the brake light flickers only now and then, start with simple checks. Look under the bonnet at the brake fluid reservoir. Compare the level against the minimum and maximum marks. While you’re there, glance around the master cylinder (the thing underneath the brake fluid reservoir, with four pipes coming out of it). You’re looking for any signs of leaks, corrosion or damage.
Check the handbrake lever or pedal. Make sure it’s fully released and see if the light changes as you move it. If you’re comfortable doing so, you might also look at the connectors for the reservoir and handbrake switch to see if they feel loose or corroded.
But if the light flickers more often, comes on solid or appears alongside the ABS light, don’t wait. Brakes aren’t something to gamble with. Driving with a fault in the braking system risks serious safety issues and higher repair costs later. If in doubt, get the car booked in.
