Common VW suspension problems and how to spot them

If your Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT or Škoda feels a bit off lately, bouncing around like a see-saw, pulling to one side like a supermarket trolley with a dodgy wheel, or groaning like a pub door on a wet Tuesday – it might be trying to tell you something.

We often overlook the suspension system. After all, it’s just springs, right? Actually, your vehicle’s suspension is a crucial part of comfort, efficiency and safety. If you can recognise the early signs of wear and get the root causes remedied, you’ll keep it running smoothly and save hundreds of pounds on costly repairs. That’s that this blog is about.

What does the suspension do?

Your car’s suspension is a bit of an unsung hero.

Let’s say you drive over a pothole or a rough patch of road. Your car is solid metal (as you’d hope). Without the suspension, that jolt would pass straight through the frame and the seat and into you. Your ride would be instantly and endlessly uncomfortable. And on top of that, the car’s rigid body would mean it jerked around all over the place, which is incredibly dangerous from a handling perspective.

The suspension’s job is to soak up those shocks, smoothing out bumps so you hardly notice them. It also keeps your tyres pressed firmly against the road, which matters a lot for steering, braking and overall control.

A modern suspension system consists of several key components. Shock absorbers contain a hydraulic fluid. They slow down and control the bounce of the springs. That means they ensure your car doesn’t bounce endlessly after hitting a bump. Of course, the springs themselves flex to absorb impacts. They do the bulk of the work of ‘holding up’ the car. (In modern cars, the spring and shock absorber are combined into one ‘strut’ for the front wheels.) Bushings act like cushions, reducing friction and softening the connection points between moving parts. Control arms hold the wheels in place while allowing them to move up and down as the suspension reacts to the road.

So it’s much more than a couple of glorified coil springs. When any of these parts wear out, your car’s suddenly missing a crucial component in its system. Its response to the road changes.

Common suspension problems in VW Group vehicles

Worn shock absorbers

When shock absorbers start to wear, you’ll feel your car bounce more after hitting a bump or notice the ride isn’t as smooth. If the shock absorbers leak, your tyres might wear unevenly, and your braking won’t work as well.

Damaged or broken springs

If a spring breaks or wears out, one side of your car might sit lower than the other. You might also hear knocking noises when going over bumps.

Worn suspension bushings

As bushings wear out, including those on the control arm or anti-roll bar, you might hear clunking sounds, notice the steering feels less steady, or see uneven tyre wear. They can also cause vibrations and make the steering feel loose.

Failing struts

When struts fail, your ride feels bumpy, and you’ll notice reduced control, especially when turning or braking. Worn struts can also cause uneven tyre wear and strange noises over bumps.

How to spot suspension issues in your VW

Being aware of the symptoms can help you identify suspension problems early:

  • Unusual noises like clunking or knocking sounds when driving over bumps.
  • Poor handling, such as your car pulling to one side or feeling unresponsive when steering.
  • Uneven tyre wear across the tread. Inspect your tyres for uneven tread wear. Sometimes, misaligned wheels put extra strain on suspension components, too.
  • Excessive bouncing or swaying after hitting a bump or going around a corner.
  • Visual inspection. Sometimes, there’s no better sign than a good old examination with your eyes. Look for visible signs of damage, such as leaking shock absorbers or snapped springs.

When to seek professional help

If you know your way around cars, you might be able to fix some minor issues DIY-style. However, suspension problems usually require professional help. The suspension can be fiddly and even dangerous, especially when fitting springs under high tension. We use tested spring compressors to maximise safety.
