A car is a machine, yes. But it’s more than that. It’s a companion for your daily runarounds, adventures and memories. It has a personality of its own.
Keeping it in top condition demands regular attention. Here at Sunset VW in Derby, we’ve spent over four decades specialising in servicing Volkswagen Group vehicles (such as VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda).
In general, most VWs need servicing about every 10,000 miles or every year, whichever comes first. That’s just a generic answer, though; for the most accurate, check out your car’s service manual.
The importance of regular servicing
Regular servicing keeps your VW running smoothly. That means better fuel economy, more reliability and better performance. It means fewer problems on the MOT, including emissions testing. It means much-improved safety. It means issues don’t develop into something more serious (and more expensive or even catastrophic). And it means doing your due diligence to prevent unexpected breakdowns.
Don’t worry, there’s much more. Regular servicing for your VW keeps it in better condition, so it enhances its resale value and desirability, improving how quickly it should sell. Plus, keeping a full service history (FSH) from a trusted Volkswagen garage means reassuring potential buyers that you’ve looked after it.
And there are warranties to mention. Cars are mechanical devices, so they naturally wear out over time. Your warranty assumes that you do your part in looking after it. Having your car serviced by VW specialists means that if something goes wrong, Volkswagen knows it’s not your fault. (On the flip side, if something does go wrong because of a lack of service, Volkswagen can quite rightly refuse to cover the costs).
Although servicing can sometimes be expensive, it shouldn’t be bank-breaking. It’s a small price to pay for all those benefits.
Factors influencing your VW’s service intervals
Manufacturers like VW provide general service guidelines (such as every 10,000 miles). But that doesn’t mean you have to wait until then. Your car’s condition (and its deterioration rate) depends on all sorts of factors, some of which you can control, some of which you can’t. Here are a few other things that might influence how soon you choose to get your VW serviced:
- Driving conditions – frequent short trips and stop-start driving put the most strain on your vehicle, by far. So does any kind of regular aggressive acceleration, braking, or steering.
- Environmental conditions – harsh environments like rocky fields, dusty construction sites, or up and down mountains in the Peaks might put additional strain on your vehicle.
- Mileage – higher annual mileage might mean increased wear and tear, requiring more regular maintenance. It’s really dependent on the type of mileage – smooth motorway sailing (if there is such a thing in the Midlands!) equals few problems. Stop-start traffic in and around Derby, day-in and day-out? Now there’s more likely to be issues.
- Vehicle age – older vehicles might benefit from more frequent servicing due to the natural degradation of components over time. That said, newer models also sometimes require more regular servicing, thanks to warranty requirements.
Understanding service types for your VW
There are typically two types of services we recommend for Volkswagen Group vehicles: minor services and major services.
Minor services include basic maintenance tasks like oil and filter changes, tyre checks, and fluid top-ups. It’s usually recommended every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.
Major services are a more comprehensive check-up. They include all tasks from the minor service, plus additional inspections and replacements, such as spark plugs, brake fluid, and air filters. It’s typically recommended every 20,000 miles or 24 months.
That means you’re usually following a cycle of a minor service and then a major service. It’s the most cost-effective way of giving your car all the TLC it needs. Once again, though, the most accurate information you’ll find comes straight from the service manual in your vehicle. If you’re feeling stuck, ask a trusted mechanic for direction.
