What is AdBlue?
You find AdBlue in all modern diesel engines on British roads. AdBlue is a mixture of 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water. Your VW injects it into the exhaust system. The AdBlue reacts with harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gases, breaking them down into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.
In simple terms, here’s how it works. When your diesel engine burns fuel, it produces harmful gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are bad for the environment. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system in diesel engines sprays AdBlue into the exhaust pipe.
In the exhaust, the AdBlue reacts with the NOx gases. The urea in the AdBlue breaks down into ammonia. This ammonia then reacts with the NOx, turning it into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. Nitrogen is a natural part of the air we breathe, and water just evaporates, so they have no negative impact on the environment when they come out of the tailpipe.
This helps your diesel VW meet strict emissions standards, like the Euro 6 regulations, which are a must for all diesel cars in the UK and EU sold after September 2014.
For VW diesel owners, AdBlue is key to keeping your car running clean and legal. It doesn’t affect power or speed, but if your AdBlue gets low, the engine might go into ‘limp mode’.
In this mode, the vehicle restricts its power to prevent system damage and force itself to meet emissions regulations. If it runs out entirely, your car could refuse to start.

When the AdBlue system is working, your car should perform as usual. In other words, keeping an eye on your AdBlue levels is essential.
How to maintain AdBlue levels and avoid problems
AdBlue consumption varies by model, but generally, it’s used at around 1 litre per 1,000 miles. Most VWs alert you with a dashboard warning when the AdBlue is running low, and it’s crucial to refill it before it runs out to avoid engine issues.
To top it up, use a certified AdBlue product. You’ll find AdBlue at garages, parts suppliers, Halfords (and similar shops) and some petrol stations. Don’t be afraid to ask a member of our friendly team for help finding some AdBlue.
Carefully follow the instructions in your vehicle manual. It will detail precisely how to add your AdBlue and, importantly, what PPE you should wear. In most VW models, you’ll probably find a filler cap near the diesel tank (but separate from it) or underneath the boot floor. It’s also sometimes near the windscreen washer fluid. Once you’re done, replace the cap and dispose of the AdBlue container per environmental regulations.
